Immigration and Allyship

Over the past few months, I have read several articles from first- and second-generation Canadians exploring their relationship to the Canadian state and how for most of their lives, they were ignorant to how deeply entrenched the Canadian government is in the oppression of Indigenous Peoples.

Presidential Update - August 2021

Hello and happy August!

I’m so excited to be writing my first Presidential Update of the year! It’s been a very busy summer as Steering Committee and I have settled into our new roles at OUSA and our respective student unions. A lot of exciting things have happened over the summer so far and I’m excited to share them with all of you.

Steering Committee Introductions: Armaan Singh Kheppar

Hi all!

My name is Armaan Singh, I use he/him pronouns, and I am the Advocacy Commissioner for the University of Ottawa Students' Union (SÉUO-UOSU). I am very excited and optimistic to serve as an observer-member this year on OUSA's Steering Committee and to help better advocate for students on the provincial level.

Steering Committee Introductions: Avery Morin

My name is Avery and I’m the Vice President of Education on the Students’ General Association at Laurentian University up North in Sudbury. This is my first year being involved with OUSA and I’m beyond thrilled to be able to work with such an incredible group of changemakers this year.

Steering Committee Introductions: Stephanie Ye-Mowe

Hi Folks!

My name is Stephanie Ye-Mowe, and I’m the Vice President, Education of the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA), as well as VP Finance of OUSA.

My post-secondary pathway has been... rather unconventional (to say the least). But I’d like to think that despite all the ways things went sideways, upside down, and inside out— I’ve come to learn and understand the world around me in ways that I never would have otherwise. And (luckily for OUSA and WUSA), a lot of that does pertain to how the post-secondary sector functions.

Steering Committee Introductions:

Hello!

My name is Eunice Oladejo, and I’m the Vice President of External Affairs at Western’s University Students’ Council (USC). I just completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Transitional Justice and Post-Conflict Reconstruction (I know, it’s a mouthful lol). I’m beyond excited to be a member of the 2021/2022 Steering Committee and to also lead the team as the incoming OUSA President!

Call-Out for Indigenous Artists

Are you an Indigenous student and artist who would be interested in being featured in an upcoming look-book/magazine created by and for Indigenous students?

Emily DuBois Brooks is working alongside OUSA as the Special Projects Intern this summer, and she is also an Indigenous undergraduate student at Wilfrid Laurier. She is creating and executing a look-book/magazine which will act as a creative platform designed to represent and celebrate Indigenous student artists from universities across Ontario.

Steering Committee Introductions: Jacob Marinelli

Hey!

My name is Jacob Marinelli, I use he and him pronouns, and I am currently the Commissioner of External Affairs for the Alma Mater Society (AMS) of Queen’s University. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a member of OUSA’s Steering Committee this year and look forward to representing my peers.

Steering Committee Introductions: Siobhan Teel

Hi everyone!

My name is Siobhan (she/her) and I’m the Vice President of Education at the McMaster Students Union. I’m so excited to be a member of the Steering Committee this year and can’t wait to work with OUSA to advocate for students both at McMaster and across Ontario.

I’m originally from Beaverton, Ontario, where I lived up until I moved to Hamilton to attend McMaster. After five great years, I graduated from the Political Science program and ran in the VP elections for the 2021/2022 year. In the past, I’ve been involved with the MSU through the Municipal Affairs Committee where I worked in a team to advocate for affordable, safe, and equitable student housing. At the same time, I worked on the Ancillary Fees Policy Paper as we researched non-tuition fees and resources available to students.
