Statement to our Members: Response to Freedom of Speech Directive

During the 2018 Provincial Election in which the PC Party of Ontario was elected to a majority government, the party pledged to mandate the universities uphold free speech on campuses and in classrooms. On August 30th, the Ontario government announced that post-secondary institutions in Ontario will be required to develop free speech policies by January 1, 2019.

Habitats: Students in Their Municipalities, 2018

The Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA) is proud to release the 2018 edition of Habitats: Students in Their Municipalities. This annual publication is comprised of a series of case studies on municipal-level topics and issues affecting undergraduate students. Written by students from OUSA’s member institutions, these submissions aim to highlight both successes and challenges in municipalities across Ontario, providing insight into how students feel about issues within their communities.

Shared Perspectives: A Joint Publication on Campus Sexual Violence Prevention and Response

The publication identifies challenges and opportunities that exist in individual provinces, but also looks past provincial borders in order to highlight sexual violence as a problem all jurisdictions need to solve. Shared Perspectives provides an understanding of the issues students experience on campuses across our country, and highlights how we must work together to end sexual violence on post-secondary campuses across Canada.

Today’s economy and social structures are everchanging, becoming increasingly globalized. Now is the time to start a conversation about how Ontario can overcome the challenges the future holds and we are pleased to see the Council of Ontario Universities initiating the discourse. The Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA) believes it is crucial that this conversation include the leaders of tomorrow: today’s students.

What are you going to do with that: Exploring Pathways to Employment

There are many, many careers students can enter into with their humanities and social science degrees. To illustrate this reality, the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance conducted a short interview series with four professionals who graduated from humanities and social science programs from Ontario universities and now have prosperous jobs.

Habitats is a series of case studies on municipal-level issues affecting undergraduate students. These are written by OUSA campus researchers from our member institutions. Topics in this issue include an examination of the student rental market in London, Ontario; student housing surrounding McMaster University; student housing in the City of Waterloo; campus mobility at the University of Waterloo; and the Student Maintenance and Resource Team at Queen's.

Student Advocacy Conference: Report for 2015

From November 30th - December 3rd 2015, OUSA representatives convened at Queen’s Park for OUSA’s annual Student Advocacy Conference. This conference, a staple in the organization’s yearly rotation, is one of OUSA’s most effective lobbying events. This year Steering Committee chose three priorities for the advocacy week: tax credit reallocation, the provincial funding formula, and work-integrated learning. To advance these student priorities, student representatives met with dozens of political staff and government officials. Summarized within this report are the outcomes of the week.
