Presidential Update: September 2026
Hello again,
We made it through September. Last month I wrote that August was the last stretch of quiet before the year started in earnest, and September made good on that promise. Campuses come alive this month like no other time of year. First-years arrive with their lives packed into the back of a car, residence floors go from empty to full in a single weekend, and orientation and welcome events fill every quad, hallway, and lecture hall. It is busy, it is chaotic, and it is genuinely one of the best parts of the year. To every student who arrived this month, whether for the first time or the fourth, I hope you found a moment to enjoy it.
Education and the Imaginary: To Fight for the Unseen
There are often times when I find myself wondering if I can keep up with the fight - questioning if I can continue to advocate to centre humanity in an educational system that has historically overlooked those on the margins. This work can be tiring, especially as I navigate challenges from within the system I hope to see change. In the midst of so much uncertainty in higher education, it can be difficult for students to envision what comes next, as the future can feel discouraging. However, as we celebrated Canada's Emancipation Day last month (August 1st), I was reminded of the power of imagining beyond what we know today.

August is the last stretch of quiet before the year starts in earnest. Move-in dates get confirmed, tuition invoices arrive, and students sit down to figure out whether the numbers actually work for the year ahead. On our end, it has been a month of finishing what we started over the summer and finding our footing for September.

Hello all,
If June was a month of beginnings, July has been a month of conversations. With the Legislature on summer recess, this is often when the real relationship-building happens: MPPs are back in their communities and more available for a sit-down, and government relations work shifts from the halls of Queen's Park to ridings across the province. I've spent a good part of this month doing exactly that: showing up, listening, and making sure OUSA's advocacy priorities for the year stay front of mind for the people who can act on them.

For many of us across Ontario's universities, it marks the tail end of the academic year, a moment to pause, celebrate what we've accomplished, and prepare for what's coming next. This year, that transition feels particularly significant.
