Presidential Update August 2022

Happy August everyone, hope you’ve had an amazing summer so far!

It’s hard to believe that we’re at the tail end of summer already, but we’ve been working hard the last few months to prepare for the year, and we can’t wait to welcome students back to campus! July was filled with a lot of behind-the-scenes work here at OUSA, including determining our advocacy priorities and related policy recommendations as well as getting our working groups started for the year. On the policy paper side of things, our Steering Committee members, student authors, and Research & Policy Analysts have been hard at work during think tanks, focus groups, and student consultations. Once again, we look forward to engaging with students and hearing about what’s important to you!

OUSA’s Steering Committee and Home Office have also been engaging with other organizations in the sector, such as the Mental Health Commission of Canada and Possibility Seeds We’re always looking for opportunities to amplify student voices, and it’s incredible seeing the potential and effects of student advocacy!

Although the end of summer is bittersweet, back-to-school season has always been a personal favourite time of year. For me, while returning to university was different from shopping for new notebooks and cool gel pens in high school, I was always excited to see what another school year would have in store. This year is no different! OUSA has been diligently (and very eagerly) preparing for our Fall General Assembly in October and setting our advocacy priorities for our Student Advocacy Conference in November. We’ve also been working on our fall campaign, centred around sexual and gender-based violence, so keep an eye out for that in the coming months! I’m looking forward to the campus visits we’ve been planning too, so look out for OUSA visiting your campus this fall!

All this to say we’ve spent our summer gearing up for the school year, and I can’t wait to see you all back on campus. I hope you’re as excited as we are for a great year ahead. Wishing you all a lovely August – see you in September!
