Presidential Update - February 2018

Happy March everyone!

As Reading Week concludes and the weather begins to warm up, OUSA is ready for Spring!

This month, we launched our OUSA Votes campaign to encourage students in Ontario to Pledge to Vote in the upcoming provincial election. Hundreds of students have already taken the pledge! Students have also been telling us about the issues that will be important to them in the election. They care about things like mental health, the cost of education, free textbooks, and experiential learning. Take a look at our election blog by visiting ousavotes.ca and follow along with the campaign with #StudentsVote.

With the election coming up in June, the summer is shaping up to be an exciting one! Transition has begun on most of our member campuses, and Home Office has released two intern positions for current undergraduate students. These opportunities is for students who have some knowledge of student issues and advocacy, but are eager to learn more. Visit ousa.ca/job is you are interested in applying for our Summer Research Intern or Summer Advocacy & Communications Intern.

In other PSE news, the Ontario Government’s “Student Voices on Sexual Violence” survey has been sent out to all post-secondary students in Ontario. We’re encouraging all students to share their perspectives on sexual violence, to understand the climate in this province. OUSA looks forward to working with the government to enact change based on the results of the survey.

This past weekend we held our annual General Assembly at Laurentian University. Our delegates approved our three papers: Student Health and Wellness, Student Credit Transfer and Mobility and Mature Students. The papers for our Fall General Assembly were also decided and we will be updating the papers: Technology Enabled Learning, Tuition and Teaching and Assessment.

The semester is almost over but before our Steering Committee prepares their successors for their roles, we want to celebrate the year with our Partners in Higher Education Dinner. This event is a unique opportunity for students, politicians, researchers, advocates, faculty, and university administrators to get together for an evening of discussion, networking, and good food! You should be able to find an invitation in your inbox, or contact our office to learn more.

With Spring on the horizon, we look forward to working with all of you before the end of the semester!

#PSEout,

Andrew
