Hi everyone! My name is Samiksha (Sami) Babbar (she/her), and I have been given the exciting opportunity to join OUSA as the Communications Assistant for the 2024/2025 school year!
I am in my fourth year of the Integrated Sciences program at McMaster University, concentrating in Biology and minoring in Statistics. This research-extensive, experiential learning program has allowed me to be involved in various projects including those at the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research and within the McMaster Faculty of Science.
One of the key things I have learned in past experiences and throughout my degree is scientific communication, and how important it is to convey evidence-based research and policy. I have since been involved in helping to raise student voices within undergraduate communities. I was first interested in OUSA through their policy paper on student health and wellness. Particularly, I was involved in some advocacy work regarding student mental health on campus at SOCH McMaster and was looking into changes that are being proposed within post-secondary institutions. This club tackles the stigma around mental health in South Asian communities, and provides a safe space for open conversation around the topic. When I was looking for how change was being proposed within universities, I noticed that OUSA specifically mentioned that mental health resources should be culturally sensitive, and investments should be made towards affordable care for all. I have since realised how important it is to have an organisation that addresses similar concerns in legislation and policy since it amplifies issues that span across Ontario and are faced by many undergraduate students.
I also love all things related to graphic design — which is well applied to my current position at OUSA! I have been involved in my program’s publishing committee for the textbook History of The Earth Volume XIII, working on all things related to design and formatting. I also have done a lot of outreach for clubs such as marketing director for SOCH McMaster, and website designer for McMaster Health Tech. Promoting messages and goals in a fun, engaging way can help people feel more connected to an organisation, which is what I aim to bring into OUSA as well.
I am excited to be taking on projects in the field of advocacy and communications, and helping to align them with OUSA’s mandate and mission! I hope to support the team with graphic and publication design, and any initiatives planned. Other than my work with OUSA and academics, I always love to stay active at the gym and play sports such as badminton. I have also recently started to enjoy painting and cooking again, which have always been ways that I de-stress after a long day!
If you have any connections or want to connect, please do not hesitate to reach out to my email, [email protected]. I am always happy to answer any questions or talk about any shared interests!
