Rural and northern students experience distinct challenges specific to their geographic regions when accessing and succeeding in post-secondary education. Currently proposed solutions are not effective for those students living in or coming from a rural and/or northern setting as most solutions are favourable to southern or urban student experiences. As such, acknowledging the distinct experiences of rural and northern students is crucial for improving the affordability, accessibility, accountability, and quality of post-secondary education in our province. This policy paper delivers a thorough and comprehensive review of solutions to challenges such as barriers to access, transit challenges, gaps in infrastructure, unsupportive campus and community climate, and limited employment opportunities to ensure the circumstances of northern and rural students are addressed and improved across the province.
