Hello! My name is Maya Hobbs (she/her) and I am the Vice-President (Education) for the McMaster Students Union (MSU) and the Vice-President Administration and Human Resources for OUSA.
I recently graduated from McMaster University, and majored in Political Science Specialization in Public Law and Judicial Studies with an Interdisciplinary Minor in Inclusive Communities and Social Justice. My academic journey truly encapsulates my interests in law, politics, and especially advocacy. I hope to harness my passion into a future career in the legal field, bridging my interests between policy and law.
Throughout my time at McMaster, I have been very involved in the student community. I served as Co-President of the McMaster Pre-Law Society which allowed me to support a community of aspiring legal professionals and help others realize their potential. As Vice-President Administration of the McMaster Political Science Student Association, I was able to be part of a team keen about politics and policy. In addition, as a Welcome Week Rep for the Social Sciences Faculty, I provided support and guidance to students’ transition into university life. My experiences at McMaster have strengthened my zealous support for the power of community and drive for student advocacy. My advocacy passions stem from my beliefs of an inclusive and equitable environment for all. There are a multitude of priorities that will drive my advocacy this year including, student housing, mental health, and environmental sustainability.
My first exposure to OUSA was as a delegate at the Spring 2024 General Assembly that was held at McMaster. Since then, OUSA’s work has inspired me and I am so grateful to be a part of this organization. My roles within OUSA and the MSU will allow me to amplify the student voice through advocacy and policy, giving back to the student community. Amplifying student voices, after all, is at the core of our duties as leaders in student government.
I am truly grateful for this opportunity to further OUSA’s mission statement and embrace the values we bring throughout our work – advocating for an equitable, accessible, affordable, accountable, and high-quality post-secondary education.
Outside of the office and school, I love to go hiking, attend concerts, travel, play sports, read, and watch legal or political fiction TV shows. I am always looking for new suggestions of books to read or new shows to try!
Needless to say, I am so excited for the year to come and cannot wait to see what OUSA will accomplish this year. Please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] or [email protected]. Thank you for reading!
