Introducing Staysha Kasunich, VP Education of Laurentian University's Students' General Association!

Hi Everyone!

My name is Staysha Kasunich (she/her), and I’m entering my third year as a Law and Justice student at Laurentian University. I was born and raised in Northern Ontario in the city of Sudbury, and feel lucky to have grown up with the small-town feel the city offers.

I began my studies in 2022 and during my time at Laurentian University, I have been pleased to be involved with both student groups and student government. I have served as an executive member of LawLU, the university’s clubs for Law and Justice, and Criminology students, as well as working for the Student’s General Association (SGA). I became involved with the SGA in the summer of 2023 as an Administrative Assistant and worked my way up to Associate Vice President Policy and Advocacy, which I held during the previous academic year, and now to my current role as Vice President Education.

I am excited to get started on the many initiatives I have planned for the 2024-2025 academic year. My overall goal is to improve the university experience of our students. On a large scale, this looks like advocating for the unique needs of Northern and rural students alongside OUSA. This includes ensuring equitable access to affordable and quality education. I believe that education is a right, not a privilege and that all people, regardless of where they live or come from, deserve the opportunity to embark upon post-secondary educational experiences if they wish. At Laurentian, I hope to work on sustainability initiatives, educating students about the importance of maintaining a sustainable lifestyle, and how to grow their own food year-round. Additionally, I aim to advocate for improved mental health services on campus, and for international students, specifically pertaining to housing, food insecurity, and bursary opportunities.

When I am not working at the SGA or studying for school, you can find me cooking up new recipes, watching my favourite reality TV shows, playing board games, going for bike rides, or spending quality time with my family and friends.

Please feel free to reach out and connect with me at [email protected]. I welcome opportunities to chat about concerns, suggestions, or ideas related to advocacy with OUSA or Laurentian University. In addition to English, I also speak French, and I encourage people to contact me in the language they feel most comfortable. I can’t wait to see what this year brings!
