Hello Everyone!
My name is Staysha Kasunich (she/her), and I’m entering my fourth year as a Law and Justice student at Laurentian University. I was born and raised in Northern Ontario in the city of Sudbury, and feel lucky to have grown up with the small-town feel it offers.
I began my studies in 2022, and during my time at Laurentian University, I have been pleased to be involved with both student groups and student government. I have served as an executive member of LawLU, the university’s club for Law and Justice students, as well as working for the Students’ General Association (SGA). Working for the SGA and OUSA has revealed an unfounded passion for advocacy and prompted the creation of the new Laurentian University Women’s Student Association, where I serve as the Co-Founder and Co-President.
I am excited to get started on the many initiatives I have planned for the 2025-2026 academic year. My overall goal is to improve the university experience of our students. At Laurentian, I aim to advocate for improved mental health services, housing, food insecurity, and bursary opportunities on campus.
On a large scale, I aim to advocate for the unique needs of Northern and rural students at a provincial level. This includes ensuring equitable access to affordable and quality education, but most importantly, investment in the post-secondary sector. I strongly believe that education is a right, not a privilege and that all people, regardless of where they live or come from, deserve the opportunity to embark upon post-secondary educational experiences if they wish. Without adequate funding, universities will not be able to survive, students will be significantly disadvantaged, and they will be hindered from obtaining the quality education that I know Ontario can offer. With that, I am excited to continue advocating for Ontario undergraduate students!
When I am not working at the SGA or studying for school, you can find me on long walks, cooking up new recipes, watching my favourite reality TV shows, or spending quality time with my family and friends.
Please feel free to reach out and connect with me at [email protected]. I welcome opportunities to chat about concerns, suggestions, or ideas related to advocacy with OUSA or Laurentian University. In addition to English, I also speak French, and I encourage people to contact me in the language they feel most comfortable.
I can’t wait to see what this year brings!
