Steering Committee Introductions: Mackenzy Metcalfe

Hello!

My name is Mackenzy Metcalfe and I am the Vice President External Affairs at Western Univerity’s Students’ Council (USC). On May 22nd, I was also elected Vice President Finance of OUSA. I recently graduated from Western with an Honours Specialization in International Relations and am excited to return to campus this year to further advocate for student-led change.

In my time at Western, I have been heavily involved in the campus community. I volunteered as an orientation leader, was a member of my faculty’s student council, worked as a server at our student-run tavern, The Spoke, and as an Associate for the former Vice-President of the USC. These experiences led me to interact with students from all across campus and made me interested in improving students’ experiences at Western. I wish to use my interest in politics cultivated during my degree in International Relations to help our university campuses and ensure that they are welcoming, supportive, and inclusive for all students.

This year provides unique challenges with the onset of a global pandemic. With many courses online, summer jobs canceled, and post-secondary education looking much different than it ever has, it is important that we speak with students to identify their concerns in these trying times.  It is important that we amplify the voices of students and advocate for change within the post-secondary education sector and beyond. I hope to work with OUSA’s Steering Committee to ensure that students are supported during these uncertain times and continue the conversation on how we can achieve OUSA’s vision of accessible, affordable, accountable, and high-quality undergraduate education in Ontario.

I am looking forward to this year, the challenges it brings, and the opportunity to create a better post-secondary education landscape for students across Ontario.
