Introducing Vivian Chiem, OUSA's New Advocacy and Communications Intern

Hi everyone!

My name is Vivian Chiem and I’m very excited to be working with OUSA as our Advocacy and Communications Intern this summer.

I am in my final year of university at Wilfrid Laurier, where I am studying Political Science. Through my academics and extracurriculars, I've developed a strong interest in improving the student experience.

On the one hand, I have contributed by offering high-quality programming throughout the school from my roles as an Orientation Week Icebreaker and Activities Team Coordinator. On the other hand, I've learned about the inequalities that many of my peers face. There are numerous issues that must be addressed, including the difficult times of COVID-19, sexual and gender-based violence, and a lack of mental health services.

In my role, I hope to gain a better understanding of the challenges that post-secondary students face on a daily basis. I'm looking forward to incorporating what I've learned into my capstone projects. My first project will be a media art piece that uses photography to capture the essence of a problem. Colour theory and marketing tactics will be used to convey this through the models who will be participating. My second project will involve using OUSA's YouTube channel to interview important members of the community through popular segments such as Hot Ones and Carpool Karaoke. This will show another side of the Home Office, Steering Committee, and other stakeholders, as well as touch on ongoing policy changes.

Besides all these exciting facts about me, I am also a huge nature lover, food enthusiast and music fan. In my spare time, you can catch me either taking a long walk, munching on ice cream or having a dance party in my room.

This is only the beginning of my four-month assignment! Keep in touch and stay connected to see the final outcome of my goals. Feel free to contact me with any questions, collaborations, or suggestions at [email protected].
