Introducing Eddy Avila, OUSA’s New Research and Policy Analyst

Hello!

My name is Eddy Avila and I’m super excited to be joining OUSA and the Home Office Team as the newest Research and Policy Analyst.

I completed a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree, specializing in Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences at Western University, where I also had the privilege of serving as the President of the University Students’ Council. During my time at Western, I participated in several of OUSA’s conferences including General Assembly and Advocacy Week. I quickly became captivated by OUSA’s ability to make students such a prominent voice within the post-secondary education sector in Ontario. It was amazing to see driven student leaders from across Ontario universities creating evidence-based policies, lobbying government and stakeholders, and running successful advocacy campaigns.

This experience helped me better understand the impacts that government legislation and policy decisions have on the lives of thousands of individuals in the province. With this in mind, I accepted the opportunity to work in a Minister’s Office and experience Queen’s Park for myself. While at Queen’s Parks, I continued to be impressed with OUSA’s evidence-based policies and approach to student advocacy.

I come back to OUSA with experience working in government and having been a student executive myself. I am extremely excited to work with OUSA and to support the outstanding students who continue to make OUSA a well-respected voice for undergraduate students in Ontario!

I’m looking forward to meeting many of you in the next few months. If you want to grab a coffee, talk research and policy in PSE, go climbing or add me on PokémonGo, please don’t hesitate to send me an email at [email protected].
