Hi everyone!
My name is Ana Tremblay, I use she/her pronouns, and I'm the Vice President Education at Laurentian University's Students' General Association (SGA) in Sudbury. I grew up in a small town in northern Ontario called Kapuskasing which has a majority French population and a little over 8,000 residents.
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History with minors in Human Resources Management and Religious Studies. Although I’m completing my education in English, my first language is French and I love the opportunity to talk to people in French! I originally joined the SGA's Board of Directors in October 2021, where I chaired the Finance Committee, and was a member of other internal committees such as the Constitution and Policy Committee. I am extremely excited to continue my journey within student politics this year as Vice President Education.
I began working for Laurentian in October 2020 as a Peer Advisor for the Student Success Centre (SSC). Within this role, I worked with academic advising and orientation teams to help answer student questions related to all things orientation, transition into university, and course selection/registration, among other things. Now, I help coordinate the Work Study Program through the SSC. This program helps create on-campus employment opportunities for students in financial need. Through this work, I have been able to gain a better understanding of my university’s administrative process and have gotten the opportunity to help make it more student-friendly. A major victory for myself and for students at large was when the university agreed to augment the minimum hourly student wage across campus to $16.
Outside of the SSC, I am the President of Pride Laurentian, a student-led resource centre that focuses on educating and advocating for the rights of 2SLGBTQ+ students. In March, we had a pride week full of events which were geared towards our 2SLGBTQ+ community and promoted acceptance and allyship, as well as provided a safe space while everyone enjoyed themselves. A really exciting opportunity we had was to host a drag show on campus and I hope we can do it again! As a queer student, being able to create a community within my university that celebrates diversity and inclusion has been very rewarding.
I’m really looking forward to being part of OUSA’s Steering Committee this year! I believe that my previous experiences and institutional knowledge will be very helpful and that my perspective as a queer, French student from one of the few universities in northern Ontario will be extremely valuable.
