EMPLOYMENT TERM: 16 weeks from May 10th  to August 27th, 2021

COMPENSATION: $15 per hour, 35 hours per week

LOCATION: Remote Work


OUSA is looking for a skilled and passionate Summer Special Projects Intern to join our close-knit team for the summer. This is a great opportunity for students who have some knowledge of student issues and advocacy but are eager to learn more, and for those who are committed to decolonizing post-secondary education.

Under the guidance of the Research & Policy Analysts, the Summer Special Projects Intern will be working in a small, energetic, and supportive (virtual) office, where they will engage with complex policy topics, conducting consultations, qualitative and quantitative research, contributing to OUSA publications, and supporting internal policy review with the goal of improving OUSA’s efforts to decolonize and Indigenize our policy and advocacy process. This internship offers the opportunity to develop policy, collaboration, and research skills while learning about advocacy and public policy in Ontario.



To be eligible for the internship, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate student at an OUSA member institution (Brock, Laurentian, Laurier, McMaster, Trent-Durham, Queen's, Waterloo, Western); 
  • Not have held a prior position with OUSA as a staff member or Director; and 
  • Identify as Indigenous, including First Nations, Inuit, or Métis.



The successful candidate will:

  • Possess a working knowledge of MS Word and Excel;
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills; 
  • Have employment, volunteer, or academic experience with research methods and policy analysis;
  • Demonstrate an ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-based environment;
  • Possess a keen interest in post-secondary education and Ontario politics; 
  • Possess a strong commitment to the work of unsettling, decolonizing, and Indigenizing post-secondary education and provincial advocacy work; and
  • Demonstrate an appreciation for OUSA’s mandate and mission.



The OUSA Summer Research Intern will undertake special projects in the areas of research and policy, in addition to supporting the OUSA home office team in the day-to-day operations of the organization. Reporting to the Research and Policy Analysts, the Summer Research Intern will:

  • Lead the second phase of consultations and policy development for OUSA’s Indigenous Students policy paper;
  • Develop and carry out an internal policy and process review to support OUSA to decolonize and Indigenize our policy and advocacy work; 
  • Assist with the review, analysis, and publication of data from the Ontario Undergraduate Student Survey;
  • Author periodic blog updates on research findings related to OUSA policy priorities;
  • Participate in and support the planning of summer conferences;
  • Revise, when required, facts and figures in standing policies of OUSA; and 
  • Support the work of the Research & Policy Analysts, Communications & Operations Coordinator, and Executive Director in projects as required.

Summer Special Projects Intern Assignment

As Special Projects Intern, you have been tasked with supporting the “Next Steps” for OUSA’s Indigenous Students Policy Paper, including facilitating consultations, conducting research, and supporting student authors. 

For this assignment, please read the linked Backgrounder and prepare a project outline for OUSA’s “Next Steps”. You do not need to conduct the research or create a policy brief.

The project outline should include the following;

  1. A list of the primary concerns with the previous process, including how you would avoid those concerns in your work;
  2. How you would approach consultation and inclusion of student voices;
  3. The types of resources you would provide student authors; and
  4. The scope of your research and how you would approach gaps in existing research.

Your document should not exceed one page (single-spaced) in length

Your project outline should be clearly laid out and organized

It should include enough explanation to guide someone through your process

This assignment should take approximately 1 hour to complete
