First published in 2004, Educated Solutions was created to recognize and explore the unique challenges faced by Ontario’s university students, providing a forum to address the concerns of our Province’s undergraduates, with content from individuals and groups who are working to change the system.

Issue 8: The Student Affordability Issue

Issue 8 was published at the end of 2011 for the 2011-2012 academic year, the third and final issue created by editor Alvin Tedjo. Sean Madden was president of OUSA for this issue, titled: “The Student Affordability Issue.” Premier McGuinty wrote the foreword, with articles by Hugh MacKenzie and Harvey Weingarten, and contained OUSA’s polling results.

Issue 7: The Student Success Issue

Issue 7 was published in fall 2010 during the 2010-2011 academic year under Alvin Tedjo, and president Meaghan Coker. Issue 7 was named: “The Student Success Issue.” The foreword was written by Bob Rae who states: “OUSA has always done an outstanding job,” and featured an article on student success written by McMaster University President Patrick Deane.

Issue 6 was published in fall of 2009 during the 2009-2010 academic year under editor Alvin Tedjo, and president Dan Molton. Issue 6 was titled: “The Future of Post-Secondary Education Issue.” University presidents David Johnston, Amit Chakma and Jack Lightstone featured articles in an issue that included an article on enhancing quality of teaching and learning by Dr. Joy Mighty, and financial aid literacy by Miriam Kramer.

Issue 5: The Access Issue

Issue 5 was published in the spring of 2009, during the 2008-2009 academic year under Tammy McQueen and President Trevor Mayoh. This is the only academic year in which two issues were published. It was the first issue themed around one particular issue, titled “The Access Issue.”  Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities John Milloy and Kwantlen President David Atkinson contributed to this issue.

Issue 4 was published in fall of 2008 during the 2008-2009 academic year under editor Tammy McQueen while Trevor Mayoh was president of OUSA. The issue asked the question: “are you getting a quality education?” CASA National Director Zach Churchill, now a Nova Scotia MLA, contributed to this issue along with Henry Mandelbaum, Executive Director of OCUFA and future OUSA Honourary Member.

Issue 3 was published in fall 2007 during the 2007-2008 academic year under editor Howie Bender. The chair and president at the time was David Simmonds. This issue had articles written by outgoing president Paris Meilleur, and articles that discussed nutritional options on campus, student run newspapers, and student apathy.

Issue 2 was published in spring 2006 during the 2005-2006 academic year under editor Adrienne Watt, with the editorial board and steering committee led by Stephanie Murray. This issue was focused on the barriers to higher education, and featured articles from Dr. David Johnston, President of the University of Waterloo and now Governor General of Canada, and Normal Riddell, the CEO of the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation.

Issue 1 was published in fall 2004 during the 2004-2005 academic year under editor Kathe Rogers. The editorial board or steering committee was led by Alison Forbes, chair and president of OUSA. This first issue featured articles from Bob Rae who was leading the Rae Review at the time, Kathleen Wynn, Parliamentary Assistant to the Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities, and Mark Rosenfeld from the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations.
