Hello Everyone! Thanks for taking the time to read about this campaign! I am very excited to have the opportunity to participate in a very worthwhile cause!
I am a 3rd year political science student with minors in psychology and french. Those who know me consider me a poli sci nerd, which I embrace! Nevertheless, I am an enthusiastic sports fan and play several different sports including hockey, soccer, ultimate frisbee, and baseball (along with just about any other one if given the opportunity). I have loved getting involved in the university with orientation week, the Sigma Chi fraternity, campus clubs and other campus activities and it has thankfully given me the opportunity to meet so many great people–which I feel is such an invaluable aspect of the university experience.
Now, the truth is, this campaign will simply be reinforcing the status quo for me. Given my unsuccessful summer financially, I came into this school year in severe debt and just could not wait until OSAP funding came in. However the financial relief provided by OSAP did not last very long. In fact, the “relief” only last a few weeks despite being at the very top level of funding that OSAP provides. After covering all of my school fees, rent, textbooks and other extraneous fees, I found myself back in the situation I found myself in during the summer. It has not been a pleasant experience. And given my extra-curricular involvement, getting part-time employment is nearly impossible.
So I am happy to give light to the situation that I find myself in; not only because of the difficulties I have had, but also because I know that there are many people in a similar or even worse situation than I am in. I do not think that students are entitled to massive “free money” as some people may think that this campaign is trying to say; my thinking is that students should not be saddled with overly excessive stress that take away from their academic and personal potential. One way in which to reduce this stress would be to ensure that students are not living several thousand dollars below the poverty line. To do that, the Ontario government must reassess its approach to the OSAP funding formula.
Hopefully, with this campaign, we will get them to do just that so students are better able to fulfill their academic and personal potentials!
Thanks everyone!
