Presidential Update - December 2017

Welcome to 2018!

We hit the ground running this term with the #TextbookBroke campaign. With some inspiration from our friends in British Columbia and Alberta, we are running this campaign to increase awareness about the burdensome cost of learning resources, and the alternatives available, such as open textbooks! Earlier this year, eCampusOntario launched an Open Textbook Library, housing over 200 open resources for instructors to adopt and adapt. Through initiatives such as tweeting out receipts and writing letters to faculty, students are making instructors aware of these resources.

This week we also hosted think tanks with the authors and researchers who will be writing our policy papers for the upcoming term! They will be writing recommendations for improving health and wellness on campuses, increasing mobility and reducing barriers for students looking to transfer credits, and for improving the university experience of mature students. We will be presenting these papers to our General Assembly in early March, which will be hosted by the Students' General Association/Association Générale des Étudiants at Laurentian University.

Finally, while our recent deep-freeze made summer weather a distant memory, June 7th is closer than we think! Leading up to the provincial election, we will continue to keep student issues in the conversation, as well as be encouraging students to register to vote!

We have an exciting term ahead of us, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated!
