Last Wednesday, The Globe and Mail put out a call to readers on their website for comments on the topic “Are today’s youth worse off or just lazy and entitled?” Amid headlines about students protesting in Quebec and national attention on the issue of tuition rates, both in Quebec and here in Ontario, this question of youth entitlement has been raised numerous times.

In 2011, OUSA released a submission entitled Going Global: Supporting Ontario’s International Students in which we outlined a strategy to achieve Premier McGuinty’s stated goal of increasing international student enrolment by 50 per cent over five years. Among many recommendations, OUSA advocated that care should be taken to control international tuition fees, which are currently 3.5 times greater than those of domestic students. Last week I had the privilege of attending two conferences on student mental health. On Wednesday, I attended a Mental Health Community of Practice Day held at Sheridan College. On Thursday, I was at the Royal York for the Focus on Mental Health Conference hosted by Colleges Ontario, and co-sponsored by ourselves, the Council of Ontario Universities and the College Student Alliance.
