So today was a special day for me.  It was my boyfriend’s and my third anniversary, as in three years dating, not married yet.  Anyway, my boyfriend is in Uxbridge, which is two and a half hours away so we couldn’t be together today at all but we still got to talk on the phone, which we do pretty much every day.  However, I still decided to celebrate a bit and some of my friends were dropping back in around dinner time from Ottawa going to Uxbridge so I thought we could go out for dinner.  So for breakfast I had my three muffins but no milk.  Then for lunch I wasn’t going to have much either until I was snooping around in the fridge and found some leftovers that my friends left from the weekend.  It was some form of pasta with mushrooms and tomatoes and chicken and something green but it was good.  So I’m going to count that as 1 serving veggies, 2 servings grain.  It was free because my friend left it behind (haha Smitty). I just had water to drink all day. Then when we went out for dinner we went to Legendz because they still have their $5.95 meal thing between 4pm and 10pm.  I had a pizza submarine.  I was pretty good.  It also came with a drink so I had ice tea.  I was all set to pay for it when one of my friends that came with me insisted on paying for the meal.  (Thank you JD)  So when I came home I made a smoothie to make up for all the fruits and vegetables that I missed today but planning for going out today.  I again used the peach juice and banana instead of the raspberries so it was cheaper.  I also had a glass of milk.  So my total spending for the day was $3.36 but I had 2 free meals.  My servings that I consumed were 8 servings of fruits and vegetables, 6 servings of grains, 1 serving of milk and 2 servings of meat.

Last night I made up some chocolate chip banana muffins. The muffin mix cost $3.44 and I only used half of it, which would come to $1.72.  The chocolate chips I added cost about $0.82.  I also put sliced up a banana and added banana slices to the top of all the muffins before baking so that cost $0.26 for a banana.  The 16 muffins that resulted cost $2.80, meaning each muffin is worth about $0.18.  I had three for breakfast this morning with a glass of milk.  They were delicious, by the way.  Today I offered to teach beginner French horn lessons to a fellow student so she offered to pay me in food.  I accepted and she bought me lunch at the Scholar.  I had a pasta with one helping each of chicken, mushrooms, tomatoes and broccoli/cauliflower mix.  It was in a tomato béchamel cream sauce.  I also had a chocolate milk that she got me.  Then I laid down for a nap when I came home after rehearsal because I wasn’t feeling well and then slept through my alarm by half an hour.  Which meant I was really behind because I had to play at a concert tonight so after running around like a chicken with my head chopped off I grabbed 2 cans of Chefboyardee to take with me and ate them backstage, one before the concert and one during intermission.  After the concert I got to relax and I had a can of peaches.  So my total spending today was $6.13.  I had 5 servings of fruit and vegetables, 6 servings of grains, 2 servings of milk and 3 servings of meat.

Food For Thought: Day 16

Since I’m still not feeling well (I know, it’s been a very long recovery process compared to normal), I slept in late and didn’t end up getting out of bed until around noon.  I started the day off right with a nice meal, and headed off to campus.

On campus I spent some time working on a group assignment, which I think looked pretty good in the end, and had a few hours of class.  After that I had some time before my evening meeting, so I microwaved my dinner, which in this case was some leftover soup.

My meeting went until about 9:00, at which point I came home; one of my friends was nice enough to give me a drive even though I live kind of out of her way.  By the time I got in, I realized I was really hungry – the soup was definitely not enough to tide me over.  So I made myself a quick dinner, did some school work, and now I’m off to bed.  Until tomorrow!

Andrew

Meal Breakdown:
Lunch: an apple, some chicken bacon, two glasses of juice, and some soup.
Dinner on Campus: leftover soup and two glasses worth of milk.
Dinner at Home: a small ham sandwich and a pile of carrots.

Estimate on Food Guide Servings:
Vegetables and Fruit: 5-6
Grains: 5-6
Milk and Alternatives: 2
Meat and Alternatives: 1-2

Blog 15:

I slept in quite late today for the first time in a while. This, and the fact that I participated in a Blood Donor Clinic Event definitely affected my eating habits today. I had a breakfast/lunch today which consisted of cereal, yogourt, a banana and a snack bar (about $2.50 in total). I had a bigger meal here because I knew that it is important to do so before donating blood (I learned the hard way in the past). However, after that, I did not have another full meal. I ate a lot of snacks at the blood donor clinic (great way to get free food by the way–not healthy, but free), and promptly went to campus afterwards to work on a paper. I intended to go home and make a meal but mid-way through the night decided that it would be better to stay the course with the paper and just get something on campus because I had some spare money to use. Unfortunately, the Pizza Pizza on campus was closed down when I got there and since I had left all my stuff in the computer lab, I couldn’t venture off-campus, nor could I buy something at the other places on campus because none of the meal choices would have kept me within $7.50. I fault myself for bad planning, but also I was unlucky in that pizza pizza was randomly closed. When I finally got home (very late) I ate a snack and a banana as I was much too tired to make anything else (the fatigue likely brought on by donating blood and missing a meal). I did not plan well to eat today, however, for days like this it would be nice if I had an option on campus that I could eat a meal for a more reasonable price that would keep me under my $7.50 allowance. Today is a learning experience…I’ll work to not make that mistake again.

Food For Thought: Day 15

Since today is a Monday, I had the chance to sleep in and get some much needed rest.  This was a very good thing, because this cold is just sticking around – it does not want to go away.  Of course, with sleeping in comes an odd eating schedule.
I grabbed a quick brunch around 11:30am or so, and one of the guys I live with was nice enough to drop me off at campus in time for my 12:30 class.  After that I had a few meetings, worked on an assignment, and went over to our University Community Center to pop by our council office to check my mailbox and see how signups were going for interviews over the next few days.

While on my way up to the council office, I found out (well, I already knew but had forgotten) that it was Western’s Earth Day, so there was a Farmer’s Market of fresh local fruit and vegetables set up on the main floor.  I checked out the produce, and eventually decided to go for a Golden Delicious apple.  It definitely lived up to its name!  Best $0.75 I’ve spent in a while, I think.

After that I headed down to see the results of our VP elections for next year.  It didn’t turn out exactly how I had been hoping on all the fronts, but since I’m graduating I guess there’s a limit to how much I can complain.

I hadn’t been expecting to be on campus as late as I was, so I hadn’t packed a dinner.  I stopped by our Dining Hall and picked up some simple items to round out a dinner until I could make it home to grab something else.  As it turned out, I didn’t get home until much later than anticipated, so I was bit hungry by the time I arrived.

All in all today was a pretty good day – if I had known I was going to be on campus as late as I was, I probably would have packed some dinner, but sometimes things don’t turn out as we expect.  I guess I’ll have to be a bit more cautious next time.

Andrew

Meal Breakdown:
Brunch: two slices of raisin toast and a banana.
Afternoon Snack: a golden delicious apple
Dinner: some fries and some rice.
Midnight Snack: a piece of bread with peanut butter, an apple, and some Ketchup chips.

Estimate on Food Guide Servings:
Vegetables and Fruit: 4-5
Grains: 6-7
Milk and Alternatives: 0
Meat and Alternatives: 1

Sarah's Salmon Casserole

Monday, March 22, 2010

So this morning I woke up and had some peanut butter and jam on toast, 2 slices, with a glass of milk.  Then when I was home for lunch I had a can of Chefboyardee Beefaroni and I made myself up a smoothie.  However, I made a few modifications to my smoothie.  I took out half of the raspberries and added the juice from the can of peaches I had yesterday and a banana.  The juice cost me nothing because I added in the price for the whole can of peaches yesterday and the banana only cost $0.26.  So the price of this smoothie was $2.20 but it had an extra serving of fruit compared to the other one.  Then for dinner I did up another box of KD and used up the last of the sauce from the BBQ Weiners.  I also ended the day with a glass of milk.  So my total for today was $7.30.  I had 8 servings of fruits, 5 servings of grains, 2 servings of milk and 2 servings of protein.  This is the closest I’ve ever come to getting everything in and not going over budget.

Food for Thought – Day 15

My usual routine would consist of waking up at 8:00am for a shower, tea and breakfast. However, it was Monday morning and I was little busier than usual. Therefore, a little more unorganized than usual too. I managed to make a breakfast wrap (1st serving and $1.50), but you better believe I forgot to pack a lunch.

I hopped on the bus an take the 40-foot limo all the way up the hill to make it to my 9:30am class. I started to fade, however, because I seriously lacked the kickstart that I needed to go on. So, I purchased a tea from the We Proudly Brew for $2.28, or, 30% of my daily allowance.
One class, one work shift and three meetings later, I decide to settle into the Learning Commons to prepare a marketing case for my 7-10. It’s 5:30pm. I could have gone home to grab something for dinner, but I really needed to finish reading for class. Note: I can’t tell you how many times I have been slapped with this dilemma –   so, as per usual, I used the remaining $3.72 for the day to purchase a wrap from the Booster Juice on campus. Alas, it costed me about $6.

TOTAL for Day 15 = $9.78

Food for Thought – Day 14

I accepted to do the Food for Thought experiment on the condition that I would not sacrifice maintaining my love of food. There are several reasons why I enjoy epicurean delights – the most important being for social gains. I don’t literally mean that food is my friend. Although, if it was, it would be a really good one. What I mean is that a lot of what I do, the break that I take midday or during the evening to keep myself sane, involves food!

I might meet a colleague over tea or indulge in all-you-can-sushi with some friends once in a while.

A few occasions this week called for some serious bonding time over some good eats… but Sunday I kept it light with homemade everything. This was totally doable as I did not leave my apartment.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner probably costed around $5 combined and I made up for the lack of goodness in my diet in previous days with a full 8 servings of veggies.

TOTAL for Day 14 = $5.

So, TOTAL for week 2 = $55.53  (even with a few freebies like snacks and breakfasts!
